1040-SR (Web-based) | How to Prepare a Tax Return for an Amish or a Mennonite Taxpayer with No SSN

What are the Amish and Mennonites?
The Amish and Mennonites are 2 religious groups that have their own beliefs; some of which state that it’s impermissible for some orders' followers to partake in several activities, and to own a Social Security Number, among other things. Some orders of the Amish let their followers have SSNs, while some don’t. In case you go through this and an Amish wants to prepare their taxes.

 

If the main taxpayer has no SSN, make sure you enter ALL ZEROS when you start the tax return.

if Married Filing Jointly (MFJ), enter the same SSN for the spouse. (ALL ZEROS)

To add an Amish or a Mennonite dependent, follow the steps below:

  • From the left-side widget, go to Basic Information then Dependents/Qualifying Person

  • After you fill in the information, check the Check here if the individual does not have an SSN, ITN, or ATIN box

  • A question will pop up and ask if the dependent will be completing a Form W-7 (Application for ITIN), select NO

  • Under the Select the Reason your Dependent doesn’t have an SSN choose Amish or Mennonite accordingly.
