1040-SR (Desktop) | How to Transmit a State Return Without Transmitting the Federal Return with It.

To transmit a state return alone, you need to first mark the return (both federal and state) complete, then follow the steps below:

1. From the Main Menu (Quick Menu), go to e-File

   Open

   

    

2. From the E-file Main Menu, choose Transmit Electronic Return(s)

   Open

   

    

3. Look for the column that reads “State Only” and check the box right below it, as shown below

    

4. You will be asked to confirm that you only wish to e-file the state return. If you have more than one state on file, you will be asked to choose which state you’d like to e-file.

PLEASE NOTE THAT:
You cannot file a State Return alone if the state you’d like to transmit alone is one of these three:
- Alabama
- Kansas
- Oklahoma
